MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Firefighters are still trying figure out what started a deadly house fire in Monroe County. Two men attempted to save the woman inside before firemen arrived.

WCBI’s Tom Eble was in Monroe County and has more on this heroic and tragic story we first brought you online late last night.

Coroner Alan Gurley says 51 year old Sheila Markham died at the scene.

The fire started just after 10 last night.

Gurley says a neighbor drove by and saw flames coming from the Stovall Crossing Road home.

That’s when the man and his son tried to save Markham.

“The older gentlemen went into the house, he knew the lady that lived here being a neighbor, he went into the house and saw the victim, he started to try and remove her from the house, he got to….from the living room area to the kitchen door and he got a little overcome by smoke, so his son went in and helped him out and at that point the fire department arrived.”

An autopsy will be done tomorrow in Jackson. Three volunteer fire departments helped put out the fire last night.
