ITAWAMBA, Miss. (WCBI) — The president of Itawamba Community College says the entire area is mourning the loss of a conservation officer this past weekend.

Friday evening, 56-year-old Master Sgt. John Collum was hit by a car while investigating reports of a prowler on John Rankin Highway.

Collum worked with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks. Many people throughout the area know his family.

“They’re just wonderful people,” ICC President Mike Eaton said. “I’ve known their kids, and of course they had John, Karen, Seth and Shea, and particularly Dr. Billy Collum and Barbara. They are wonderful people. Go to church with them, he has done so much as that whole family has for Itawamba County. So it is something that all of us love the Collums.”

Collum’s funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at the Davis Event Center on the ICC campus. Visitation is this evening at the same location.
