TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) -It was a celebration this evening as hundreds of Joyner neighborhood residents filled the gymnasium of Joyner Elementary in Tupelo.

The school and neighborhood were hard hit by last year’s tornado, but this evening’s dinner and celebration’s theme was “Rebuild, Replant and Rejoice.”

Area churches such as St. Luke UMC and West Jackson Street Baptist provided food and snow cones. Also, several businesses sold items with proceeds going to the school.
Organizers say it’s important to come together to celebrate all that has happened in the year since the tornado hit.

“That’s what we did in the days following the tornado, we all came together as one to help each other and so that’s why we’re coming together again tonight, to share our stories and reminisce about what happened last year and see how far we’ve come in the past year.”

The neighborhood association presented a check for 800 dollars to the school from sales of special t shirts commemorating the rebuilding efforts. A ceremony lighting luminaria was postponed until Saturday evening because of the threat of rain.
