WINSTON COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) In January of 1863, one of the most significant pieces of legislation in US history was passed- the Emancipation Proclamation. Now, 150 years later, this document is still celebrated for its acknowledgment of freedom and equal rights.

“We can never forget history because there is so much rich history here in Mississippi. Some of it is very bad and we as African Americans should never forget the ones that went before us and fought for some of the rights that we deserve,” said Charles Hampton, a Winston County resident.

Winston County has been celebrating Juneteenth for 29 years. For some residents, the festival has great significance and they’ ve been coming for decades. For others the festival is just a time to have fun and relax. Juneteenth’s history runs deep, and now almost every state in the nation celebrates the event. Despite being a century old tradition, many still see it’s relevance today.

“It’s very important because a lot of black history moments don’t get celebrated and this is a event that I think everybody should be able to come to just come together- white and black people,” said Diawanikee Miller.

Hampton is a seasoned veteran of the Juneteenth Festival. He has a message for younger generations to help them understand American history.

“We would like the young people to understand that we are reaping that we did not sow,” says Hampton.

Juneteenth Festivals will be continuing around the nation during the month of June.
