HOUSTON, Miss.(WCBI)–While our children are out of school for the Summer, bus drivers are busy making sure their means of transportation to and from school meets with the highest safety standards possible.

Dozens of drivers are trained to examine the vehicle assigned to them, making sure the equipment is in good working condition at the beginning of each school day.

“Checking our buses daily to make sure that before we start our route, that all of our tires are correctly inflated, that the correct fluids, that our stop arms are actually working so that people that’s driving can see our stop arms or stop signs,” said Chad Spence/Houston City School District.

“Try to be safe and get the kids home and to school safely and watch traffic to make sure that we don’t have an accident,” said Toy Coleman/Bus Driver-Mechanic.

For those drivers, just having their license from the motor vehicle division is not enough, much more training is needed before they can earn the right to get behind the wheel of one of those buses.

“You will have bus training on the parts of the bus about safety and then from that time period the driver will go out into the community,” said Chad Spence.

“As a bus driver, we have to get these children home safely and to make sure that they’re acting like they should as far as sitting down in their seats and not cutting up,” said Jack Cook/Bus Driver-Mechanic.

If those drivers are successful in transporting their precious cargo from point A to point B safely while keeping an eye on other motorists, then their mission has been accomplished.

“The main thing about safety is making sure we watch everybody else, as far as making sure they’re aware that we’re coming,” said Chad Spence.

There are 24 bus drivers for the Houston city schools, during the school year they transport some 800 kids to and from school on a daily basis.
