TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Hundreds of women across our area spent their lunchtime learning how to detect breast cancer at an early stage and also how to have the attitude of an overcomer. The annual NMMC Spirit of Women’s “Pretty in Pink” luncheon took place in Tupelo. It is an effort to encourage women to know about the early signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

The guest speaker was Lillie Shockney, a two time survivor of breast cancer. Shockney, who serves as administrative director of the John Hopkins Breast Center in Baltimore, encouraged women to keep a positive attitude when facing any crisis, such as breast cancer.

“Breast cancer is doable today, early detection is the key,  use humor everyday of your life cause it is one of the ways we can reduce our stress,” said Shockney.

Breast cancer survivors were also honored during the Pretty in Pink luncheon.
