LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – The Lowndes County School Board is one step closer to setting a bond referendum amount.

The school board held a work session, where the county tax collector, bonding attorney and architect were present to discuss more information re-guarding the proper bond amount for the county schools.

In August, the $47 million bond referendum did not pass and now, the board is lowering the bond amount and educating the public about the issue.

The money will go towards a new New Hope High School and additional upgrades to the other county schools.

Lowndes County School District Superintendent, Lynn Wright, says the bond would not be a tax increase for residents and they hope to have all the facts and figures finalized as soon as possible.

“Now the board is trying to take and weigh this information and they’re going to come back with some more figures in detail at the next meeting, which will be on February 13th, hopefully we can make the final decision then and go forward,” said Superintendent Lynn Wright.

The bond issue amount could be around $39 million, but that figure should be final at the next board meeting.
