Tupelo, Miss. (WCBI) – An economic development expert from South Carolina said Northeast Mississippi is poised for continued growth as part of the long term impact of the Toyota plant in Blue Springs.

Hal Johnson was guest speaker at Friday morning’s “Wake Up Tupelo Lee County” breakfast. The CDF sponsored event allowed audience members to ask Johnson how the Greenville South Carolina area was affected by the BMW auto plant that located there in the 1990s.

Johnson offered advice in saying that along with the expected boost in housing sales, business start ups and tax revenues, there are many other long term effects.

“The leadership, the community leaders who are here, your team has done a great job of putting pieces of puzzle in place, having infrastructure , having right type of training programs in place, but you need to not stop just because you got the big one here. You have to continue to invest in yourself, to make Tupelo a better place. So you ought to be on the lookout for suppliers, for research opportunities.”

Johnson also encouraged leaders to continue to think about diversifying the manufacturing and workforce base.
