TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) -Thousands of elementary and junior high school students from across the state have descended on Tupelo this week. It’s part of the Mississippi Junior Beta Club’s statewide gathering of what could be the next group of school, college and community leaders. WCBI’s Allie Martin brings some highlights of what the students will take back to their schools and families.

It was two full days of inspirational speeches. Group Talent. And a host of academic and artistic competitions.

“I just love convention.”

For the second year in a row, the annual Mississippi Junior Beta Convention brought some of the best and brightest to Tupelo’s Bancorpsouth Arena.

The theme for this convention is “Rockin’ The Country” and every aspect of the event focuses on the cornerstones of Junior Beta, Academic Achievement, Character, Service and Leadership.

Students get a break from their normal routine.

“Obviously, we enjoy getting out of school.”

They learn how to overcome stage fright and also take away other valuable lessons.

“I learned from it that you do get awarded for doing good, because this is fun for me, this is what I consider fun, and I make good grades so I get to have fun.”

“Being able to achieve so many things is like, the best thing you can possibly do and work harder and do more.”

Teachers say Junior Beta provides many benefits.

“I think it also gives students, the ones that think outside the box, gives them a place to fit in school and to be around others like them.”

“I remember being in high school Beta, getting to participate in skits, making friendships and developing a stage presence and it’s helped me so much throughout life, becoming a teacher and having an audience everyday.”

After a lot of hard work and a lot of fun the conference wraps up with an awards ceremony. Winners in their categories will head to Nashville this summer for the national competition. In Tupelo I’m Allie Martin WCBI News.
