LEE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — More than 120 fifth and sixth graders in Lee County vow to make good decisions.

The students graduated this morning from Drug Abuse Resistance Education, or DARE program, at Mooreville.

For ten weeks, they have learned about the importance of saying no to drugs and also they have learned how to prevent bullying, how to avoid dangers on the internet and other skills.

Organizers say the lessons stay with the youngsters long after elementary and middle school.

“We’ve done it long enough, now you see the impact of it. As I told these kids, I have a lot of employees who went through the DARE program. My own daughter went through it, now teaches school. A lot of teachers — younger teachers — are a product of the DARE program,” Sheriff Jim Johnson said.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Department has sponsored the DARE program for more than 20 years.
