TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – More than 600 athletes and coaches hear from legendary football coach Bobby Bowden at The Orchard Church in Tupelo.

Bowden knows the influence a coach has in a player’s life. Bowden coached the Florida State Seminoles for 34 years, with only one losing season. He credits his success to his Christian faith.

The longtime signal caller says he noticed a clear breakdown of the family and declining church attendance.

“My last years of coaching at Florida State, most of my boys didn’t have a Daddy, most came from broken families, and where are they going to get it, out of the street, can’t get it in school anymore, they’ve taken the Bibles out of school, so the Fellowship of Christian Athletes is filling the biggest void that’s missing in our churches today,” Bowden said.

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes hosted the “Breakfast of Champions” to show the impact FCA groups, known as “huddles” are making in the lives of 35 hundred public school students each week throughout Northeast Mississippi.

“There’s a scripture in the Word of God that says, the power of life and death is in the tongue. That’s one thing I really preach to coaches, you have the power of life and death in you,” said FCA District One Director Mark Boren.

Bowden encourages Christian athletes and coaches to work hard and rely on their faith.

“I always use that as a key to my talks, about making yourself available, that’s what God wants, let Him do it. If you try to do it, you can’t, you ain’t good enough and I ain’t either, but if we make ourself available and let Him do it, things can happen that you can’t believe,” Bowden said.

The 86 year-old Bowden says he’s always thankful for the opportunity to share his story on the gridiron and his faith.

FCA plans to make the “Breakfast of Champions” an annual event.
