SMITHVILLE, Miss.(WCBI) — It’s been an active flu season. While school districts are preparing to receive students back after the holiday break, Smithville High School students returned Monday to a flu germ-free sanitized environment.

Students in some school districts have “not” returned to the classroom from their holiday break, but early Monday morning Smithville High students were back in their place, and school officials had already done things necessary during the holidays to help keep the flu at bay.

“We had some disinfectant canisters that we set off in the large gathering areas like the lunch room, the gym, all the hallways,” said Chad O’Brian/Principal-Smithville High School.

“And another thing that we really encourage is good hand washing. That’s very important. We do provide hand sanitizers in all the rooms for the kids. And we really encourage you know just good hygiene type things,” said Renee Harris/Smithville High School Nurse.

According to Principal O’Brian they do whats necessary to maintain clean facilities. If there is coughing and sneezing, the proper technique of using an arm to cover mouth and noses are strongly suggested. In addition to that, a school policy is informing parents to keep children home if they become feverish.

“We want your child at school every school wants perfect attendance if we can get it every day. But sometimes if we are running fever or we have a cold or we are starting to show symptoms; trying to come to school and work our way through it just leads to more problems,” said Chad O’Brian.

“They do need to be free of fever for 24 hours before they return to school. So we, you know try to encourage parents to follow that policy,” said Renee Harris/School Nurse.

From what we understand, Smithville Schools have not been overloaded with absentees due to the flu. And as some may have observed, during the holidays germs have not been spread in the classrooms.

“Having that break allowed some people to heal maybe go to the doctor get some antibiotics or whatever they need. But it kept it from spreading and we appear to be okay as far as today,” said Chad O’Brian.

Although students were not in the classroom to catch the flu bug from their classmates, there was a chance of being exposed while enjoying holiday festivities with friends and relative at home.
