LOUISVILLE, Miss.(WCBI)–The old hospital at Winston Medical Center in Louisville is being demolished to make way for a better medical complex.

This Louisville hospital built in 1958 is coming down and there were mixed feeling from onlookers Friday. Lab Technician Wendy Young takes pictures of the place she worked at during her college days, for her its a bitter sweet moment.

“Its sad to see the hospital go, but on the same token its exciting for the future. We’re all excited about getting a brand new hospital,” said Wendy Young/Hospital Lab Tech.

“Absolutely I was born right here at Winston Medical Center, Dr. Howell delivered me”. R. H. Brown “Can almost hear you crying right now,” said Brandi Krajewski/Winston Medical Center.

Having revamped the 39 million dollar budget, there is expected to be built a state of the art hospital, and administrative building after the demo work is completed.

“Keeping the existing nursing home building we’ve got here and we’ll be using, keeping 48 residents here in this building. We’ll be taking, adding a new building out here, still using the cottage concept and end up with about 72 residents in those,” said Paul Black/ Hospital Administrator.

After the April 2014 EF-4 tornado damaged the hospital, there was a fight to keep existing medical services available to the community. They were up and operational by May 19th of the same year.

“On top of that we started looking at different facilities that we could get in and that would help us through the long haul and that’s when we moved into our transitional facility on April First,” said Paul Black.

“House Bill 583 which I drafted allowed Winston County to save approximately 200 thousand dollars and exempt them from the certificate of need process. It is important and imperative that we got health care back in Winston county as soon as possible,” said Representative Joey Hood/MS Lawmaker.

And when the rubble is hauled away a target date to begin construction is November 1st.

By middle of the year 2017 everything at that site should be operational.
