LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. ( WCBI) — Now, it’s changing how it talks with voters about the 44 million dollar decision they’ll soon have to make.

The money will build a new New Hope High School and career tech center, while also paying for upgrades at Caledonia and West Lowndes. Educators say this will not create a tax increase.

In this new approach, board members are using phone calls and social media to get the word out.

Lowndes County School Board members are getting voters informed on what the new bond will include and how the money will be used.

Superintendent Lynn Wright says a career tech facility is critical.

“If a student attends career tech school for on year, they have a 90% chance they’ll graduate from high school. If they attend two years, there’s a 95% chance they’ll graduate from high school. Our graduation rate is around 74, 75%,” says Superintendent Lynn Wright.

Wright says explaining the benefits should help get voters to the polls, this time around they are reaching out through social media, meetings and robo calls.
He hopes the referendums date will also bring voters out, since last year few hit the polls.

“It was a stand alone election , and we only had 1,800 show up to vote for it,” says Wright.

The vote will be on May 12th will the same day voters will cast their ballot in the First Congressional District special election.

Wright says now is the time to make these changes because of low construction and bond costs.

“We may never have this opportunity again, to do as much as we can do right now, that will provide opportunities for our kids for years to come,” says Wright.

Community meetings on the bond issue begin tomorrow night at At New Hope Elementary.

Then Thursday at West Lowndes High and another on March 26th at Caledonia.

All meetings start at 6.
