LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Floor space is starting to fill as residents respond to the United Way Adopt a Family drive.

The Lowndes County United Way says the request for help is up this year, partly because families are still trying to recover from the April tornadoes.

Lowndes County United Way Volunteer Coordinator Leslie Peel says with requests up, she is also seeing more people step up to help fill out those Christmas needs.

“Every year to give back to those who are less fortunate in your community, and so many of us have so many blessings,” Peel said. “And we are just so willing and aware of the need of others the agency united way works with do see these people who have a genuine need a genuine emergency.”

Peel adds the deadline for those who have signed up to help a family is today, so if anyone who hasn’t turned their gifts are urged to do so as quickly as possible.

The United Way plans to start distributing the gifts on Dec. 15.
