LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — A Lowndes County teen has been arrested in connection with the murder of Gwen Roberson.

A press conference was held today announcing charges of capitol murder and arson against 17-year-old Traveil Hicks.

Today, Hicks was taken to Justice Court, where his charges were explained to him.

Due to the capitol murder charge, the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department expects bail to be denied.

Roberson was found dead in her trailer home last Monday after neighbors noticed the home was on fire. When asked about a motive, Lowndes County Sheriff Mike Arledge did not elaborate, but did reveal the connection between Hicks and Roberson.

“To our knowledge, he is not related to her, but he is the neighbor to her,” Arledge said. “He lives in a trailer across the street from her on 377 Downs Road.”

No further details about the cause of death were released.

Hicks will stand before a Grand Jury in late October.
