COLUMBUS, Miss.(WCBI) — In the wake of a Mississippi Bureau of Investigation preliminary report surrounding the death of a Lowndes County inmate while in custody of the Sheriff’s Department, the family of that inmate is looking for answers.

The family of 41-year-old Orlando Guyton held a press conference Friday morning in front of the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center.

Guyton was jailed after allegedly breaking and entering into an Apple Drive residence. An injured Guyton was taken to the hospital and later released. On Dec. 21, Guyton became unresponsive while at the jail.

According to Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant, there were no obvious signs of trauma other than the previous injury to Guyton’s body. A Guyton family spokesman calling the death a “mystery” says they have video from the night of the arrest.

“We want to know what happened. We have, we have a lot of questions, but we have no answers,” said Elizabeth Guyton/Guyton’s Sister.

“I’m hurt, I’m confused, I’m shocked. And I’m scared, because I can’t handle this,” said Mia Lawson/Guyton’s Daughter.

An autopsy is being performed and toxicology tests will be run.
