LOWNDES, Miss. (WCBI) — A Lowndes County industry that struggled through the recession has now completed an expansion.

When the recession hit seven years ago, EKA Chemicals shut down a production line and made other cuts to avoid laying off some of its 120 employees.

The company survived, and today, Lowndes Supervisors approved a 10-year tax exemption for an $11.6 million expansion at the plant.

The company says the expansion won’t mean direct hiring, but the plans will reopen the closed production line and create some indirect jobs.
