COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s been 35 years since Lelia Patterson was murdered during a home burglary in Lowndes County. Mack Arthur King, convicted of the crime, will remain behind bars for the rest of his life.

On Monday Lowndes Circuit Court Judge Lee Coleman sentenced King to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole.

King has been in and out of the courtroom since the 1980 crime. He was originally sentenced to death for the beating
strangling and drowning death of 84-year-old Patterson.

Numerous appeals and hearings ended last year when a federal judge ruled King was mentally retarded and could not be put to death.

That ruling resulted in his re-sentencing.
