MACON, Miss. (WCBI)–A small cluster of businesses in Macon is providing a reason for hope in an area where there is no economic boom from mega sites.

Just inside the Macon city limits on Hwy 45 Alternate, what was an area with just one business in the 1990’s, now has five more.

“We played a part in letting them have the property. Even though the property was sold from individuals but we played a major investment in buying the property out there,” said William Oliver/Noxubee County Supervisor.

Attracting customers and doing business on a rainy Tuesday is certainly not an economic boom, but it does represent growth, no matter how small some may think.

“You know we just glad that anybody that’s out there or anywhere in the county hire some of our people. And we’re glad for the surrounding counties that hiring our people,” said William Oliver.

“If we can have a major retailer or any business that can bring to Noxubee County that would kind of keep the funding within Noxubee County,” said Alshaunta Lyles/County Employee.

Make no mistake there is high unemployment, there is no Yokohama or Paccar, but revenue does come in.

“The city gets their share, the school get their share, and the county get their share. So you got three individuals that gets taxes from there,” said Emmett Mickens/Tax Collector Assessor.

“I purchase gas there, food as well for lunch breaks. I would like to see more restaurants and businesses in Noxubee County,” said Alshaunta Lyles.”

“Even though we got a high tax base I’m still positive because I think the future is going to be great, I do,” said William Oliver.

When there is the addition of one small business in a cluster encompassing some 500 yard wide, little there becomes much.

Noxubee County Supervisors are telling us there are no other businesses opening in that area any time soon.
