CALEDONIA, Miss.(WCBI)–The postal service has done their job after the mail is delivered to your roadside mail box. More needs to be done on the part of the residential recipient.

Thursday morning there were additional reports by police of suspects opening roadside mailboxes and taking out credit cards and other items of value. Caledonia Town Marshal Ben Kilgore says there is an answer to the problem.

“You know, know when the mail carrier runs and if you get off work in the afternoon check your mail. Get your mail out of it and that way you know, if there is nothing there for them to steal you know they’ll move on,” said Ben Kilgore/Caledonia Town Marshal.

Lost mail found scattered everywhere has been a concern of people in the tiny Lowndes County town. There is another option.

“Now I suggest that if you got important papers or disability checks, social security checks, something have that sent to a Post office box or let your other mail just come to your mail box,” said Ben Kilgore.

Some roadside mailboxes may cost a little more to install, but may be worth the investment for security and peace of mind.

“That has a lock on it. And the good thing about that is that you can curb mount it.So there is several options, but it does not have a lock on it. And so if you want to get inside of your mailbox, the only way that you can get in, anyone can get in besides people putting mail in your box is if you have your key, said Ann Marie Chilcutt/New Home Builders Store Employee.

But know this, the mail carrier will not have keys for every mailbox, so therefore, recipients must know their special delivery times.

“There is people thats been effected that don’t even know their mail was taken. You know I talked to a lady this morning, she doesn’t even know we have, that we turned her mail back in. It was found, we turned it back in to the post office. She didn’t even know it,” said Ben Kilgore.

Roadside mailbox owners wanting the added peace of mind and security, may want to consider that lockable box. Oh yes, and again, don’t forget to check those boxes often.
