TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Three years of hard work has paid off for an area tourism alliance.

This morning, Interior Department representatives officially approved the management plan for the Mississippi Hills National Heritage Area.

That plan will help guide cultural and heritage development of the 30-county region in the coming years.

It took more than three years of research, public meetings and inventorying of cultural assets to put the management plan together. The designation also means more federal dollars are available.

“Now that we have the federal management plan approved, we are eligible, just like the other 52 heritage areas to get full funding,” Heritage Hills President Neal McCoy said. “So yes, this opens up more funding.”

The Heritage Hills visitors center is located in downtown Tupelo.
