TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — For months, more than 40 cast and crew have spent a lot of time at the Lyric Theater.

It is the classical tale of the magical nanny who goes to work for a banker’s unhappy family. A fifth grade teacher at North Pontotoc plays the lead role.

Brittany Malone is no stranger to the stage, but says there are definite challenges playing the popular character.

“The fact that she is an icon and I have some very large shoes to fill,” Malone said.

All of the well known songs are in the stage production, and there are a few surprises.

“They’ve written in a couple of new pieces, maybe three or four that are more conducive to stage shows and they add to the plot,” she said.

Everyone involved in this production has put in a lot of work.

“You can search on youtube and see Mary Poppins on Broadway, and we’re trying to bring the same kind of theater experience to Tupelo Mississippi and I think we’re doing a good job in carrying it off. It’s a great show, great music, great dancing,” said Bob Swanson, who plays “Bert.”

Ten year old Faith Williams is a tap dancing chimney sweep. This is her first experience on the big stage and she says audiences are in for a treat.

“It’s a great show,” said Williams.
