TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — A candidate for U.S. senate says he is pleased with the quick response of the federal government to aid those affected by last week’s tornado.

This morning, Chris McDaniel, who is hoping to unseat longtime incumbent Senator Thad Cochran, spoke to Chapter 43 of the Disabled Veterans of America in Tupelo.

McDaniel said this country needs leaders who will return the nation to its Christian principles, and he also vowed to fight to overturn Obamacare.

The state senator said last week’s outbreak of tornadoes throughout the state warranted the swift action of the governor and other lawmakers.

“Well, Mississippi needs that help, and we support their efforts in that regard. We thought the governor did a good job in his request, and we’re behind him a thousand percent. More importantly, we’ve been praying for the people of Mississippi. We know we’re tough, we’re strong, we’re resilient — we know that God has a plan, and in his will we will find a way and be strong again. No question about that,” McDaniel said.

McDaniel has strong support from the Tea Party.

He faces Cochran in the June 3 primaries.
