CALHOUN CO., Miss. (WCBI) — Local Economic developers do have a vision for Bruce and Calhoun County, but another perspective is helping to give them a better assessment for maximum success.

MDA representatives teaming up with Bruce and Calhoun County economic developers are adding an extra set of eyes to local project developments. In spite of a rainy Thursday, and with assistance from MDA, an economic future is looking much brighter.

“And whether it be buildings their history, their story. We want to hear about their story. What makes them unique. And once we find out that information we take that and we put that on our Mississippi Dot Org asset map where locals as well as people outside of the state can actually see those assets in the community,” said Tina Blue/MDA Project Manager.

“And that we can as a community in Calhoun County we can develop Calhoun County into a stronger area for growth, industrial growth, commercial growth for residential. A place to live, good schools. And we want to do that to enhance our county,” said Miles Jeffrey/Community Tour Guide.

The fact finding tour is bringing to light ideas and strategies that might have been overlooked in the past.

“Cause sometimes when you have assets in your community it can be common to kind of not really consider them as assets. You are use to seeing them, you are use to passing by the business and not really valuing it for what it is,” said Blue.

Now that strengths and weaknesses have been identified, recommendations are expected to come from the get together. And an unbiased mapping out of economic plans and options not previously considered, are now on the table.

“We think we have two strong industries here that are predominate and that’s Weyerhauser and Haworth. There are others here. We have good commercial business in Bruce. Our schools are growing getting stronger all the time. So we want to, we think those are assets to build on,” said Jeffery.

An asset mapping team tours Vardaman and will be at Vardaman Baptist Church on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
