TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Local first responders and other key members from the community took part in a drill designed to test emergency action plans. The Lee County Emergency Management Agency hosted a “hazmat tabletop exercise” at the Bancorpsouth Arena. Representatives from the police and fire departments, hospitals, the coroner, and other agencies tested their reactions to a train derailment.

The tabletop exercise is organized by MEMA as a way to test reaction and emergency plans, without having costly drills.

“I learn something everytime we facilitate an exercise just because we do them in different locales I can find lessons learned in one community that might work well in another, but more than anything we want to enhance building of the relationships between local community responders and hopefully give them something to think about in their plans that they didn’t think about when they were walking in here this morning.”

MEMA conducts a number of the table top exercises around the State.
