STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Some Starkville middle school students are getting ahead of the game in planning their future careers.

The Workforce Development Director with the Mississippi Energy Institute visited Armstrong Middle School students today.

The main focus for the presentation was to educate students on the career possibilities in skilled trades throughout the state by using the website called “Get On The Grid.”

Meredith Gunn says due to an aging workforce, there aren’t enough people to fill the open positions in skilled trade jobs. By visiting kids at a young age, she hopes they will be inspired to pursue some of these careers.

“What we really need to do is get into schools, talk to students about some of these skilled trades that are available because they are professional careers and really re-brand what is typically seen as ‘dirty jobs’ and really make sure people understand that we can do that’s really great,” said Meredith Gunn, with the Mississippi Energy Institute.

The “get on the grid” website serves as a virtual counselor for not only students, but also anyone seeking employment in skilled trade jobs.
