WEST POINT, Miss.(WCBI) –The holiday season is upon us and its the perfect time to give your pet a gift of safety assurance. Micro chipping your pet just might be a way of keeping up with him or her for a life time.

It’s peace of mind for pet owners. A tiny micro chip placed under the skin of their furry friend. The simple procedure requires the veterinarian to initially scan the pet using a wand much like this one. The chip is then inserted.

“Its actually a needle that has a micro chip in it. We pull your animal’s skin up which is called sub que, right under the skin and we inject the micro chip. It hurts a little bit, now some dogs we giver them treats while we do it so they don’t even know we did it. Some dogs it may hurt a little more than others. But its like getting a vaccination,” said Karen Emerson/Veterinarian.

92 year old Mary Moore of Columbus has had many pets over the years.

“I had one named Mesha, her picture is up there on the wall. And she died, and I had a dog that named Tiger, and he died,” said Mary Moore/Pet Owner.

Then there is two year old Electra, one of two dogs abandoned as puppies in the Columbus area. Wanting Electra to stay put, Moore’s daughter suggested having a chip put in.

“I think the chip will be better than the name tag cause they can always take the name tag and change it or something. But if I get the chip I’ll know,” said Mary Moore.

“I had a situation where a client’s neighbor took their dog. And the neighbors tried to say that the dog was theirs. And thank goodness they had micro chipped the animal. And the police went out there, they used the scanner they scanned the dog. It came up that that was their dog. And they were able to get the dog back,” said Karen Emerson.

The chip that must be scanned does not use GPS technology, but when scanned with the wand, it can allow for the reuniting of the animal with it’s master.

The chips are internationally used and is required while traveling aboard outside of the US.
