TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — It’s the season for giving and one northeast Mississippi ministry is making sure nobody is left hungry this Thanksgiving Day. Organized by the group, Christians On The Move to Evangelize, volunteers prepared nearly 800 meals to be delivered to the needy in 5 different counties.

Volunteers filled Harrisburg Baptist Church in Tupelo packing plates for those in need this holiday season.

The Thanksgiving Day feeding began over a decade ago at Temple Of Compassion and Deliverance Church and the ministry has grown every year.

Hosted by the organization, Christians on the Move to Evangelize, or COME, the group has one main purpose.

“To give back to the community, to help in the services whatever they can provide, food, clothes,” said COME member Janice Scott.

The non-denominational ministry members say feeding the the needy is just one way to unite the community.

“Black churches, white churches, different cultures, different denominations, different genders, everybody come together as a whole. I think God would like us working together as a whole, we have a ministry to do and that is to help bring people to Christ,” said Scott.

Volunteers from Northeast Mississippi not only prepared meals for the sick and shut in but also the inmates here at the Lee County Detention Center.

300 plates were delivered the the jail and volunteers say giving back is what this day is all about.

“It’s good for us to remember that there’s someone somewhere that needs us to let them know, ‘hey, I know you’re there and I’m thinking about you and I want to do something to let you know,” said volunteer Chris Sadler.

Volunteers say it’s important to let the inmates know, despite their situation, there is still hope.

“Everyday is Thanksgiving but to come down here and to let these women know that in spite of your situation, you can still give thanks as well,” said volunteer, Luevern Simmons.

COME will host another feeding on Christmas Day at Harribsurg in Tupelo.
