MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) — Domestic violence victims in Misisssippi are receiving some extra help.

The Mississippi Public Service Commission implemented a new rule today, requiring utilities to postpone collecting initial deposits for 60 days for certified victims of domestic violence.

The commission unanimously approved the rule last month.

Now, victims can get the certification they need for the waiver at any of the state’s domestic violence shelters.

“We know many people stay in a dangerous situation, simply because they can’t pack up and leave because of financial constraints,” Mississippi Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley said. “This gives a little breathing room to those victims.”

The new rule is modeled after similar measures in Louisiana and Texas.
