JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — Should the Mississippi flag stay, or should it go?

The state flag has been controversial in recent months, because it bears the confederate symbol.

Several cities and universities in Mississippi have already decided not to fly it.

Now some lawmakers believe there should be debate on the issue in this year’s legislative session.

“I would like for all of us to get together and work to come up with a flag that is not offensive to any particular group of people,” said Rep. Karl Gibbs, (D) District 36.

Governor Phil Bryant says it should be up to voters – not lawmakers – on whether to change or keep the state flag.

He says Mississippi voters spoke when they voted down the measure in 2001.
