TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Mississippi House Speaker Phillip Gunn is traveling the state as part of a listening tour.

This morning, Gunn was joined by northeast Mississippi state lawmakers at Tupelo City Hall.

Members of the public had an opportunity to talk with Gunn and lawmakers about issues important to them.

Gunn says the listening tours have produced lasting results.

“Last year, we had two separate ideas that made their way through the legislative process and were signed into law,” Gunn said. “One was a historic tax credit, this is a tax credit that gives a tax credit to people who make investments into historical buildings; another was a car tag exemption for police officers and firemen injured in the line of duty.”

Issues covered include special education legislation, Common Core concerns, improving public schools and Mississippi Adequate Education Program funding.
