JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — The 2016 legislative session is underway, and some Mississippi lawmakers are looking to crack down on drunk driving.

Rep. Gary Chism (R) District 37 tells WCBI he’s working on a bill that would implement a scarlet letter car tag for those with DUIs.

In the proposed bill, second offenders would have to have a tag that’s yellow with red letters, so everyone knows they’ve had a DUI.

Chism says they would keep the tag for a year.

“You know, you didn’t learn your lesson from your first one, maybe you will this time, ’cause every police officer will see that tag,” Chism said. “If you swerve just the least little bit, they may pull you over and check you for whether you’ve been drinking again. ”

Chism’s proposal is similar to laws in other states, like Ohio.

Opponents say these laws publicly humiliate offenders with misdemeanors, and could cause them to lose their jobs.
