STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — The Mississippi Hills Heritage Area Alliance hosted their regional meeting in Starkville on Thursday morning.

The Starkville meeting is the first in a series designed to present new opportunities available to the Mississippi Hills in preserving and promoting the historical stories of the area.

The event featured a presentation that covered the recent federal approval of the required Management Plan for the 30 county Mississippi Hills National Heritage Area.

Organizers say that protecting and preserving historic resources of the area is critical.

“All of our culture is tied to place, and a sense of place so protecting our historical resources is extremely important to really interpreting the area for ourselves and for visitors,” said Michelle Jones, who is the Community Assistance Coordinator of the Historic Preservation Division within the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.

The Mississippi Hills Heritage Alliance will host additional meetings in the future.

A meeting in Oxford is scheduled for December 16th, Corinth on January 15th and Tupelo on January 20th.
