JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) – Mississippi lawmakers’ efforts to make a political statement about control over local schools and curriculum took a step forward Thursday. The state House approved bills that prevent federal government control over testing and another bill making it clear that local school districts have final say in their daily curricula.

The measures are a response to the fear that the Common Core standards developed by the nation’s governors and educators will turn into some federal mandate that controls local schools.
