STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — One Geology Professor at Mississippi State was featured in Nature Geoscience for his discovery of methane gas in the Atlantic.

Back in 2012 and 2013, Assistant Geoscience Professor, Adam Skarke and other scientists were sailing in the Atlantic near North Carolina and cape Cod when they came across an unusual discovery while mapping the ocean floor.

The scientists saw hundred of methane rising up from the sea floor. These gas pockets are more common among Arctic and Gulf coast, but not in the Atlantic.

Skarke says the discovery was a huge surprise for all those on board.

“Very exciting moment on the ship when we saw these features we weren’t expecting we didn’t know they were going to be there and all of a sudden we saw them and so it was very exciting for us when it initially happened every one gathered around the monitors to see these results and getting excited about it,” says Adam Skarke.

The discovery will now cause scientists to revisit ocean conditions.
