MONROE COUNTY, Miss.(WCBI)–An illegal cock fighting business in Monroe County is broken up and a career criminal is behind bars.

It looks like the startup of an illegal operation in Monroe County comes to a quick end. Acting on a tip and armed with warrant in hand, Monroe County Investigators raided the property of 33 year old James Morgan on Becker Bottom Road Sunday night.

“When we got down there we recovered several items, some shot guns, some handguns,” said Sheriff Cecil Cantrell/Monroe County.

Over a couple dozen metal spurs used to strap around the ankles of chickens were seized.

“The way I understand cock fighting is when they fight they fight to the death. Thats why they have those spurs. Some of those spurs over there close to 4 inches long and razor sharp,” said Sheriff Cecil Cantrell.

The highly toxic substance called minec was apparently used by suspects in the cock fighting ring, it was sprinkled along the boarders of the area.

“What he was going to do is put that out around his animals to kill other animals that came into that place to his property. Which that animal if another animal eat that animal it would kill it and so forth,” said Sheriff Cecil Cantrell.

Poisonous minec, shotguns, handguns, metal spurs, drugs and scales. A list of items used in an illegal business, which at least on Becker Bottom Road, is no more.

“This is a case of a convicted felon just trying to do illegal activities on his property,” said Sheriff Cecil Cantrell.

About 60 chickens are expected to be rounded up from that scene. Representatives from the USDA were notified and the poisonous chemical confiscated.
