MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Some moonshine makers are out of business. Monroe County Sheriff deputies have busted up a liquor still.

Well hidden in a hilly forest region of Northeastern Monroe County just off Filtrol Road, deputies uncover a whiskey still. And from the looks of things at the sight, one of three suspects possibly realized the law was hot on their tracks and abandoned the area.

“Usually they are in peoples houses if you find them. But we haven’t had a lot of moonshine making in Monroe County. This is actually the first still that we have recovered here in our county since I’ve been sheriff,” said Cecil Cantrell/Monroe County Sheriff.

Investigators believe those suspects engaged in the illegal activity are from outside of the county.

“We think that these people that are actually operating this still from the edge of Alabama. Coming over here, the Alabama line is about three miles from here,” said Cecil Cantrell.

And although moonshine in recovered from the site, Cantrell thinks where there is smoke, there could be fire…. In this case, maybe other illegal activity going on.

“More and more you’ll find out that the people we are busting for drugs in the county they are involved in some sort of moonshine. A lot of them, not all of them but a lot of them. Just extra money, its easy money,” said Cecil Cantrell.

And so this old method of making illegal money, becomes something else county officials must deal with.

“We’re not going to permit people making whiskey or anything, moonshine or anything,” said Cecil Cantrell.

Suspects in the case have been identified, but there have been no arrests.
