STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) Adolescence can be a difficult time for some girls. But who better to help them through growing pains than their mother?

“They’re transitioning, they’re growing a little in certain areas and they need to transition from that little girl to that teenage girl,” said mother Demeatra Bluitt.

Demeatrea Bluitt and her daughter British came to the mother daughter retreat this afternoon as a chance to spend some quality time together. Instead the two left with a wealth of knowledge about effective parenting and social skills.

“I learned about self esteem and how to be confident in things that you need to do and learn how to do things right instead of doing it wrong,” said Anthony.

Many of the classes offered at today’s retreat included using anger positively, active parenting, puberty, and bullying.

“All of those issues are sensitive issues that parents don’t have the answers to or are not sure how to communicate it to their daughters so what we’re trying to give them are tools that they can use to improve communication,” said Program Manager Elmarie Carr Brooks.

“You only get one time to raise your children and so you have to be willing to roll up your sleeves, make those sacrifices, and do what you need to do to make sure that your child is successful,” said mother Tammie Tubbs.

Parents were given the opportunity to discuss their issues with active parents and teenage girls were able to ask questions about what it means to transition into being a woman.

“Stay open to her, communicate with her. Just be there for her when she needs me,” said Bluitt.

Today’s event was attended by 22 adults and 13 teenagers.
