Video: MSMS Students Present Emancipation Day

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Folks in the community were able enjoy a musical lesson in local history today at Sandfield Cemetery in Columbus.

MSMS students presented the 8th of May Emancipation Day History Program. The celebration started back in 1865 when federal troops in Columbus effectively ended slavery in the area. The show was presented by the MSMS choir “voices in harmony and showcased students dressed up as figures from history from the 19th and 20th century of the Columbus African American community. The event was free and open to the public.
