MACON, Miss. (WCBI) — A Macon football star and Mississippi State University signee is charged in connection with attacking a woman at an apartment complex.

WCBI now knows the person police think may have helped in a beating – the athlete’s mother.

“Just because his name is Jeffrey Simmons that doesn’t mean it’s right. If my brother allegedly hit a woman or beat a woman or my mother that been there, he would have been there it would have been nothing like, we both would have went to jail,” said Sophia Taylor, Macon victim.

It may have looked peaceful Monday at the Oak Street location, but after a violent altercation at Mayfair Apartments in Macon, Sophia Taylor, who is also facing misdemeanor charges, thinks Jeffrey Simmons is getting special treatment from everyone in town.

And that’s because of his standout star status as an athlete.

Information on Simmons’ Facebook page has been deleted that contained a full apology for his part in the altercation between the two families.

“Always we are going to be fair. We’re going to be fair and we don’t hold to one side. You know the law is for everyone,” said Macon Police Chief Lucious Mason.

“I’m hurt, I’m angry, I’m disgusted. It’s been going on too long. Multiple complaints have been made,” said Ellen Hairston, the victim’s mother.

According to Taylor, it all came to a head that Thursday when she was leaving the apartment complex.

“After they seen that I had gotten the best of her, she had already jumped off the ground and took off running to the other side. He literally punched me in my head in front of my son and it was not right,” said Sophia Taylor.

“She was fighting with the sister, the boyfriend, the brother Jeffrey Simmons, the mother. They had anything to do with that? It was a four on one. They stumped and beat my child like she was a dog. Like she didn’t even matter,” Hairston said.

WCBI made attempts to reach out to Simmons and his family, but through a spokesperson, they declined to comment on the incident under investigation.
