STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Last week, Governor Phil Bryant signed House Bill 1523 into law.

Since then, the law has caused controversy across the nation.

On Tuesday, students and faculty gathered on the MSU Drill Field to protest the new law.

Protesters made signs and passed out flags in support of the LGBT community.

Campaign organizer, Margaret Ann Horton, started an official petition demanding Governor Bryant to step down immediately.

“Mississippi will not stand for this. We are here to tell people that discrimination is wrong. It doesn’t matter if it’s against race, religion, sexual orientation. Mississippi will love and we will show that and that is what we’re here to say today,” said Horton.

The petition currently has under 2,000 signatures but requires over 98,000 by May 5.
