STEENS, Miss. (WCBI) – Lowndes County investigators are trying to determine if a bone found Thursday is human and if so, possibly linked to some missing persons cases.

Lowndes County deputies, along with Lamar County and Vernon, Alabama law enforcement, spent much of the day searching near the Fernbank Road home, near the state line.

The remains were sent to the state crime lab in Jackson for tests to confirm if it is human and get DNA.

Investigators say the homeowner found the bone in his yard, just after 8-30 this morning.

Right now, deputies must wait on the test results before moving forward with the investigation.

“We’re going to be waiting on what information we can get from the results of the medical examiner’s office and possible other evidence we can collect from that bone.”

It will be at least next week before testing can determine more details about the bone. If it’s human, that includes the race and gender of the person.
