COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Mississippi University for Women fall graduates have achieved another landmark on their timeline.

The university today handed off degrees to 105 students.

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant delivered this afternoon’s commencement speech, which focused heavily on recent accomplishments of the state.

Bryant’s speech spotlighted his hopes that the new graduates would seek a future here in the state not only for their benefit, but their community’s and the state’s.

MUW graduate Denzell Baker said although this chapter in his life is over, he’s looking forward to continuing his journey.

” (I’m) just excited,” Baker said. “It’s been a long four and a half years. It’s one of those moments I’ve been waiting for. And, where do I go from here? I still have more school left. It’s just one step in my major plan to get where I want to get to.”

Baker today was awarded his Bachelor’s of Exercise Science degree, and said he was planning on taking the semester off to plot out the next phase of his plan.

“You know if you make a $100 in Mississippi and you compare it nationally—nationally with the cost of living—you make 16 percent more,” he said.

Citing The W’s nursing program as one of the best in the country,” the governor said Mississippi was ranked No. 1 for practicing medicine, according to Physicians Practice.

In addition to encouraging graduates to be proud of what the state has to offer, he encouraged them to contribute to its well-being. “Go out in the world and make a difference.”
