COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – This week, the third annual Mississippi N.E.W. Leadership Conference is in full swing at The W.

More than 20 women from colleges across the state have come together to learn about the importance of politics.

The five-day conference teaches students the value of having women in positions of political leadership.

Throughout the week, different sessions are held on a variety of topics with a number of guest speakers.

Leaders say it’s important to let the students know what opportunities politics offers.

“Our representation for women is much lower. I think in the State Legislature it’s less than 20%. I serve in the Senate, we have 8 women out of 52 and so we want more women to step up to the plate. I think it’s important to have all of those voices heard,” said District 39 Senator Sally Doty.

The conference is hosted by The W and MSU’s John C. Stennis Center.
