COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The University of Southern Mississippi took down the state flag Wednesday. Now, Mississippi University for Women students will discuss doing the same.

MUW President Dr. Jim Borsig says he wants a campus community discussion before a decision is made.

Earlier this semester, Borsig met with faculty and staff, along with the student government association to talk about the future of the flag on campus.

Some lawmakers have completely avoided the issue.

Ole Miss, USM, and Jackson State among others have removed the state flag from those campuses.

However, the “W” president believes universities should teach and lead in these types of situations.

“The presence of the flag reminds us that it is there. It’s also the current flag of the state of Mississippi and that can keep us focused on the conversation that I think our students have indicated to me they want to have, which is about changing the state flag and influencing those decision makers in Jackson.”

MUW’s faculty senate is also expected to discuss the matter. Mississippi State and Delta State have not removed the state flag from their campuses.
