COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Spring Break is here for many College Students. For many this means parties and trips to the beach, that usually includes alcohol.

Now, some students at MUW are educating their classmates on how to drink responsibly while forgetting the worries of finals.

We’ve seen the Public Service Announcements.

Drinking and driving can lead to taking your own life or the lives of others.

With Spring Break just around the corner, Mississippi University for Women is spreading alcohol awareness by making a stand.

“I think it’s important to spread the awareness across the campus to let our students know that it’s okay to drink responsibly. You don’t have to feel like you have to binge drink or you don’t have to do it for social purposes or over drink,” says Ashley Ushi.

“As students, we’re kind of tagged as irresponsible and this is a way we can show our responsibility,” says Chelsea Spann.

Senior, Chelsea Spann believes the campaign may not stop her fellow classmates from drinking but she hopes they at least drink responsibly.

“Spring break is defiantly the time where people kind of let go they just need to remember to bring back the reigns and to be responsible not only fro yourself but other people out there as well,” says Spann.

According to Mother’s Against Drunk Driving, 32 percent of drunk drivers are between the ages 21 to 24. Even though messages on the dangers of drinking and driving seem to flood local High schools and Universities, one Freshman believes students need the reminders.

“I think it’s really important because so many people die every year of you know either going out and drinking or not drinking responsibility and it’s just not right for you know young people now a days to get their lives taken away for just being stupid,” says Nolan Baker.

If you plan on blowing off the stress of school during spring break, plan ahead. Find a designated driver or a place to stay before turning up a drink.

The alcohol awareness campaign will continue all week.
