NEW ALBANY, Miss. (WCBI) — A local power company has a new, energy efficient truck to serve its customers.

A new bucket truck, powered by diesel and electricity, has been in operation at New Albany Light, Gas and Water (NALGW) for two months now.

The truck was purchased as part of a grant program from the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Electric Power Research Institute and the U.S. Department of Energy.

New Albany Light, Gas and Water paid about $150,000 for the truck and has already noticed significant savings in gas. There are other benefits.

“It’s also a safer work environment because it’s much quieter,” NALGW Manager Bill Mattox said. “The crew can hear one another talk when they are communicating; it just makes for a safer work environment.”

As part of the grant program, New Albany will install a public electric charging station in the city to encourage use of electric vehicles.
