NEW ALBANY, Miss. (WCBI) – The city of New Albany has been selected to receive a prestigious grant. Selected by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Appalachian Regional Commission and the US Department of Agriculture, New Albany is receiving technical assistance and support through the 2014 “Livable Communities” grant. The support will help the city by promoting economic development, increasing access to locally grown food and preserving rural lands. The grant will also help in further development of the farmers market by adding new walkways and bike paths that will connect to the “Tanglefoot Trail.” ARC’s Federal Co-Chair says New Albany has a lot to offer:

“One of the strengths of New Albany is their leadership and ability to work together. They understand they have some great assets here, and a lot of what we do is encourage folks to look at assets they have, like this park, like the two trails, the river, downtown and how to leverage those into new jobs, new investment and new opportunities.”

64 communities applied for the grant. Nine cities were chosen. They will split the $250,000 grant.
