VERNON, Al.(WCBI)–The abrupt departure of a Tutwiler ambulance service leaves people in the town of Vernon and surrounding areas of Lamar County scrambling to stabilize professional ambulance care at that location.

A building and space in the middle of downtown once home to the Vernon Rescue Squad is being renovated and is getting a new tenant. Transcare Ambulance Service is gone, and all thats left behind is a wooden plaque bearing their name.

“So what it put us into is our local Vernon Rescue Squad which had done some patient transports, but only in the event that the Transcare Service was busy. It moved them up to primary ambulance call,” said Mayor Glenn Crawford/Vernon, Al.

Left with only volunteer help since before Thanksgiving, and wanting to stabilize care, leaders in Vernon and Lamar County are on a fast track as they come up with a solution.

“So in a joint effort between the city of Vernon, the Vernon Rescue Squad, and the county commissioners here in Lamar County; We have decided to put together a non-profit corporation. It will be run by a 5 member board,” said Glenn Crawford.

Centrally located downtown, ambulances will be dispatched throughout the city and areas in the middle of the county.

“We’ll cover Vernon, the Crossville rescue area, the South Lamar Rescue area, North Lamar Rescue area, and Detroit rescue we’ll back all those services up if they need help,” said Glenn Crawford.

Having extensive training and experience in ambulance services, when it comes to being first on the scene, Mayor Crawford knows well, that the time of arrival can be critical.

“When the phone rings the person is looking for an ambulance to come. And so we’re doing everything we can to get that service running as fast as possible,” said Glenn Crawford.

We were unable to find out from Transcare why they left their post in Vernon. Job applications for paramedics and all level EMTs are available at Vernon City hall. For more information on those applications call 205-695-7718.
